A Comprehensive Approach for FRP
In operation, FRP can have a very complex behavior. Influences may be varied and broad, from pressure thrust, vacuum, thermal expansion and contraction, wind and seismic design conditions. Depending on their magnitude, any of these influences could be the governing system design condition. It is not uncommon to have a significant design or performance concern originate from an adjacent piping segment or system. To assure reliable long term performance, FRP piping, ductwork and other equipment should be designed as an entire system for all defined design conditions. The total system engineering and the detailed component design should consider the design, operating and excursion conditions.
This point of view should be carried out from project planning through construction, including:
- Developing a quality and system oriented specification
- Product selection
- Selection of competent and quality minded manufacturers
- Purchasing and Bid Compliance
- Detailed Engineering
- Fabrication and Quality Practices
- In-shop Quality Control
- Quality Assurance
- Assembly and Construction
|
With this focus and attention to detail, the opportunity for success is maximized. The more assumptions made without a thorough plan, the more a project may be subject to chance and deficiencies. This can lead to unreliable and problematic operation. Many of these decisions occur during the planning phase. Project specifications should be comprehensive and include:
- Bid requirements
- System requirements
- A detailed description of each product and component
- All design conditions
- Engineering requirements
- Secondary bonder qualifications
- Inspection criteria
- Installation requirements
- Testing requirements
|
Engineering requirements should include a description of the qualifications of the qualifications for the FRP engineer, compliance standards, required submittals and proof of design. Hydrostatic testing, leak checks and in-service testing may be defined in the testing requirements.
With this approach, you have the best chance for success. Success is determined by the execution of the project plan. Obviously without a comprehensive executable plan, the opportunity for undesirable results is greater. Early thoughtful preparation and diligent efforts throughout the project is the key.
